5 Signs Your Spine Foundation Is Weak (and How to Fix It)

Your spine is the foundation of your entire body. When its alignment drifts away from the biomechanical reference values, the load it carries is distributed differently — and that can show up in ways patients often don't connect to their spine. Here are five signs worth measuring.

1. Anterior Head Syndrome

Often called "tech neck" or simply "bad posture," Anterior Head Syndrome is a measurable structural shift. It occurs when the head sits forward of its ideal position over the shoulders. Biomechanical modeling estimates that the load on the cervical spine rises substantially as the head tilts further forward — roughly 10–12 lbs in neutral compared with about 60 lbs at 60° of flexion. Sustained loading of this kind is commonly associated with neck pain and tension-type headaches.

2. Uneven Shoulders or Hips

Look in the mirror. Is one shoulder noticeably higher than the other? Does one hip seem to drop? Asymmetry like this often reflects more than a muscle imbalance, and a structural shift in the spine or pelvis is one of the things worth measuring. Where the foundation is uneven, the body compensates, and that compensation may load some joints more heavily than others over time.

3. Chronic Muscle Spasms

Muscles rarely spasm for no reason. Often they are protecting an area that feels weak or unstable. If you constantly feel the need to stretch, massage, or "crack" your neck or back, those muscles may be working to stabilize a structural shift. Relief-focused approaches can help genuinely, but where the underlying structure is unchanged, the pattern commonly returns.

4. Numbness or Tingling (Sciatica)

Where a disc herniates or bulges, it can compress the nerve roots exiting the spine. That may present as numbness, tingling, or sharp, shooting pain down the arms or legs — sciatica being the most familiar example. Symptoms like these warrant a proper examination rather than self-diagnosis, and if they are progressing, prompt medical evaluation.

5. Loss of Height or "Shrinking"

As we age, it is common to hear people say they are "shrinking." Some loss of height with age is expected. Where it is more pronounced, degenerative thinning of the discs is often part of the picture, and reduced spinal curves may contribute to how load is distributed through them. Measurement is what distinguishes expected change from something worth addressing.
